2 Feb President Eisenhower ends the "neutralization" of the Formosa strait.
5 Mar Soviet leader Josef Stalin dies.
28 Mar China & North Korea accepts the UN proposal to discuss the exchange of wounded and sick pows.
20 Apr Operation Little Switch (exchange of sick and wounded prisoners) begins.
26 Apr Truce talks resume at Panmunjom.
7 May China & North Korea accepts the UN proposal that prisoners unwilling to be repatriated will be kept in neutral custody in Korea rather than in a neutral nation.
25 May South Korean observers begin boycotting the truce talks on the order of president Syngman Rhee.
8 June Agreement reached on prisoner of war exchange.
9 June South Korean National Assembly reject the truce.
14 June Chinese and North Korean troops launch major offensive in eastern Korea.
18 June South Korean president Syngman Rhee order that 28.000 north Korean prisoners be freed and returned to civilian life in South Korea.
20 June China & North Korea accuses UN of complicity in the freeing of prisoners and leave the truce talks.
8 July China & North Korea agree to General Clark's proposal that the truce talks be held with out South Korean participation.
11 July South Korean president Syngman Rhee agrees to support the truce.
13 July Chinese and North Korean troops launch major offensive.
27 July The cease-fire agreement is signed and the Korean War ends.
5 Aug Exchange of prisoners (Operation Big Switch) begins.
