Real Christmas Trees The Environmental Choice
|
In this age of great environmental concerns, the
choice is simple a real Christmas tree. By choosing a real Christmas
tree over a fake tree for your holiday celebration, you are making an
environmentally sound choice. Real Christmas trees are all-American
recyclable resources. Artificial trees, most of which are manufactured
in Korea, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, consist of non-biodegradable plastics
and metals.
Real Christmas trees remove excessive carbon dioxide and other gases from the atmosphere, delaying the earth-warming greenhouse effect, and producing fresh oxygen. One acre of Christmas trees produces the daily oxygen requirement for 18 people. With approximately one million acres producing Christmas trees in the U.S. That translates into oxygen for 18 million people every day. These trees are often grown under power lines, on tope of old dumps and landfills, on sandy flats and on other marginal lands that cannot support other crops. And for every tree harvested, 2 to 3 new trees are planted in its place. Christmas tree plantations create scenic green
belts, stabilize soil, protect water supplies, and provide refuge for
wildlife. And while fake trees cannot be recycled, real trees are easily
reused. Here are some post-holiday ideas for your trees: Large quantities of Christmas trees make effective sand and soil erosion barriers, especially at beaches. Trees may be sunk into fish ponds as they make excellent refuge and feeding areas for fish. Christmas trees also make excellent bird feeders, adding color and excitement to the winter garden. You may attract birds with orange slices, suet and bird seed. They will come for the food and stay for the shelter in the branches. Living Christmas trees that come with their roots intact may be planted and enjoyed for years. |
