Pencil Sketches by Ruth Andrews

400 Indiana Ave.-Residence of Dr. Robert D.  Proffitt

The home was built by A.G. Howe and purchased in 1886 by Dr. Samuel Tyndale Wilson.  He resided there during his tenure as President of Maryville College.  It is a large two story, 5 bay, asymmetrical dwelling.  On the main facade is a 2-story gable roof with a central projecting bay and a one-story porch with Tuscan columns, a railing with diagonal lattice and a roof balustrade with square post and latticework.  The windows are the original 2/2 sashes and at the roofline are small gable dormers.  Dr. Robert Proffitt purchased the home, situated on a 1.7-acre lot, in 1974.
