The Corona
613 Court Street

Known as “The Corona,” this house was featured as a kit home in the Sears & Roebuck catalogs between 1915 and 1922.  It was part of the selection known as ‘Honor Built Homes’ which were the most expensive and finest quality homes in the catalog. The home was originally priced at $1,448.00 and increased to $2,647.00 at last offering.

The price for the home included all the materials need to build this seven room bungalow, including all mill work, lumber, lath, shingles, building paper, eaves trough, down spouts, sash weights, hardware and painting materials.  The 30,000 piece kit home and 75-page leather bound assembly instruction book was delivered in two rail road box cars to the nearest train depot to the buyer.

The Corona features beam ceilings in the living and dining rooms and a brick mantel fireplace with built-in bookcases and windows in the living room.  Separating the two rooms is a colonnade and bookcase and the dining room features a build-in china cabinet.

The original plan included a wrap-around front porch, a sleeping porch upstairs and only one bathroom.  The house has recently undergone considerable renovations including a new roof, exterior paint chosen to more closely resemble the catalog photograph and new teak front and back porch flooring.

Current owners, Lisa and Andy Atkinson, who purchased the home in 1999, have furnished the living and dining rooms in keeping with the original mission style built-ins.  Hardwood floors remain throughout the downstairs.  Future plans include a kitchen remodel and landscaping.
